Listening

This week, I am practicing listening deeply, without judgment or agenda, and I am finding that the practice pains my heart. Literally.

As children, we learned to speak through listening. I touch that same quality of childlike innocence in myself when I listen fully, generously, and without reserve.

What hurts about listening, I think, is the expansion of heart that the practice engenders in us.

To hear another, to really listen, decenters the self and centers the other. Listening is a radical and transformative act of hospitality.

Listening, I am coming to believe, is the root of all compassion.

This week, in preparation for our journey circle, I invite you to join me in listening intentionally and well to at least one other living being: human, tree, river, flower.

Let’s compare notes about the experience and reflect upon how listening and spiritual growth might be connected.

I hope you can join us in the circle this Wednesday, June 8, from 4-6 pm PDT.
